Derek was born and bred in Nottinghamshire, his career spanning over 45 years. Derek’s love of horses and horse racing first started at a young age of 14 when his father Gerald introduced him to a racehorse trainer called Eric Collingwood.
During the school holidays and at weekends Derek would show his dedication for horses by working on Eric’s yard. After his 16th birthday Derek signed on as an apprentice jockey in Middleham. Derek gained sound racing experience under the guidance of Eric Collingwood before moving on to race for Mick W Easterby where Derek was in charge of the 1977 Guineas winner “Mrs Mcardy”.
Derek spent the next five years with Russ Hobson and then a further five years as an Assistant/Jump Jockey with Roy Bowring. Derek started off with 2 horses for Roy and by the end of the fifth year Derek had managed to send out over 20 winners. These winners ranged from five-furlong sprinters to three-mile chasers. Derek spent a further three years having 35 winners as a jump jockey for John Mackie.
Then came a big decision for Derek, he decided to try something new and took up a job training for Patrick Sheehan in Sussex.
Derek’s first winner in his new job was a 50/1 horse named Coleridge in the Cystic Fibrosis Research Cup at Doncaster in March 1992. Derek followed on from this success to design a purpose build state of the art racehorse training centre for John Fretwell.
Derek was then approached by Danethorpe Racing Limited and asked to build a purpose built yard from scratch. In 2007 Derek had the opportunity to take over this yard and “Derek Shaw Racing” was born. In the winter of 2007 Derek was the top numerical all-weather trainer in the country and had managed to exceed the amount of wins he previously had at Danethorpe. Derek then married his wife Lyndsey and they decided purchase their own training yard from the very successful trainer Norma McCauley.
Derek is renowned for turning around horses that have come from bigger yards. See Loyalty winning that came from Sir Michael Stoute’s yard
